ILCA ANNOUNCES CONTEST WINNERS & LAUNCHES 2023 CONTEST

(NEW YORK, NY) – The International Labor Communications Association (ILCA) today announced its one-of-a-kind labor communications contest winners. Annually, the organization hosts what is now the largest competition exclusively for labor journalists. Thousands of entries that tell the story of the global labor movement are judged by experts in the field across the industry.

“In this moment, the labor movement has seized the world’s attention through inspiring organizing campaigns at Starbucks, Amazon, REI, Delta, and more. The stories that labor journalists and unions are telling are key components of this newly revitalized movement, and the ILCA Labor Media Awards recognize the important work our members are doing,” said Chelsea Connor, President of ILCA, and Director of Communications for the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU).

“The critical work our members are doing cannot be understated. Our jobs are to call the microphone to workers' voices, or to hold it up to them, and without those two critical pieces, worker stories are missed. The incredible amplification ILCA members are doing right now has made unionism a dinner table conversation, and the impact of the work we’re doing right now will last generations,” said DeLane Adams, Treasurer of ILCA, and Assistant Director of Communications of the  International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).

“Our members showed just how far labor communications have come in the last few years. Unions were tireless in protecting their membership in the pandemic, and that energy has continued to propel us into reopening the changing world of work, including work from home. Private and public sector workers continue to keep our country moving and our communications professionals and labor media continue to keep their stories at the center of attention,” said Marci Rosenblum, Secretary of ILCA, and Director of Communications of the Communications Workers of America Local 1180 (CWA 1180).

The awards are open to all ILCA member organizations and are given in two different classes: national/international unions, federations, councils, and allied organizations; and local/regional/state federations, central/area labor councils, and allied organizations. ILCA award categories are in general excellence, visual communications, best multimedia campaign, writing, electronic media, best use of earned media, political action, and organizing.

ILCA also gives out Saul Miller Awards for writing and the Max Steinbock Award. The Saul Miller awards highlight excellent writing connected to the areas of organizing, collective bargaining, and political action. The Max Steinbock Award, ILCA's highest award for journalistic excellence, is given in recognition of outstanding effort that explores an issue of concern to working families, paying particular attention to insight into the human spirit.

A reception to toast our winners will be scheduled soon. Please be on the lookout for an invitation to salute our colleagues soon.
